Description
"You can truly grieve for every officer who's been lost in the line of duty in this country, and still be troubled by cases of police overreach. Those 2 ideas are not mutually exclusive. You can have a great regard for law enforcement and still want them to be held to high standards." -- Jon Stewart
A man of color is drowning in the forground. He holds a dandelion from which travels SOS in morse code, up with volcanic eruption. A yellow and black protest sign on which a broken heart is drawn is stuck in the volcano shaped like Taum Sauk Caldera. Fish swim against the current and seem able to get to the top, but the current seems designed to affect the man in an adverse way. A flag sits on top of the hill in the distance. Around the border are hash tags. This is part of my "The Physics of Wishing" series. I painted this because there are very real disparities in many aspects of society that affect people of color. These disparities along with the reality of white privilege still can be felt and seen. Racism, bigotry, social exclusion and victim blaming really lead to prejudgment and discrimination. It affects the feeling of worth of people within minority groups. It affects the level of hope one can have for their children and ancestors. As a white person who has lived as a non-Muslim and as a visible Muslim I have seen and felt both white privilege and racism. I have felt the reality of it, the sometimes subversive and covert tone it can take. It can be very hard for people to understand the effects of prejudicial attitudes who have never lived under the circumstances of being prejudged, belittled, ridiculed, and blamed simply because of belonging to a racial or religious group that is an unflavored minority. Prejudice, bias, bigotry and intolerance are extremely debilitating to the individual and to the collective. It is a form of societal mobbing or bullying and the effects of this last generations.
