Storm clouds darken as they descend upon a broken vase that appears to have been split open by a stone rose whose stem had snapped. Many other stone roses emerge upward through the neck of the vase and almost merge with the sky in their color and movement. As the stems plummet into the vase they transform into to a human heart that appears almost as if it were a torso. The Right Atrium of the heart bears a tattoo as if it were a shoulder. The other half of the vase has fallen into the sand of the beach. In the background the whitecaps and waves of the turbulent water advance toward shore.
As I painted this I was reflecting on two meanings simultaneously. One interpretation has a collective meaning and another interpretation has an individual meaning.
Collective Meaning: This is a tribute to the plight of the Roma in Europe and their lack of Civil Rights. Yet, this idea can be applied universally to the Civil Rights of any minority group. The central idea being that as you exist in society, people tend not to recognize the almost daily injury that is inflicted upon you because of the group you belong to. An individual may go to the store, go to their job, etc. However, no opportunity exists for people to see, experience or empathize with his/her pain from ridicule, discrimination, abuse, bullying, mobbing and other assaults on his/her identity. The minority collective is seen by the majority as blameworthy, dangerous encroachers in an almost objectified manner, rather than seeing them in their true organic and human state where social exclusion and maltreatment actually has caused their predicament.
Individual Psychology Interpretation: Avoidant Attachment Styles (Disclaimer: This is not a reflection or related to the collective meaning.) In the individual interpretation, this can represent an individual who does not allow connection, but they suffer in their personal relationships because they are either unwilling to form psychological connection or not capable of it. The stone roses represents how the individual relates, but the inside of the vase represents the vulnerability of the individual and what happens when the vase can no longer support what it contains, leaving the vase cracked and unintentionally exposed.
